View Date:2025-01-08 16:03:11
Nine children were taken to the hospital after eating medication they found while walking to school in Chicago on Wednesday.
At 9 a.m. local time, firefighters responded to a call regarding the children, who are students at Richard J. Daley Elementary Academy, after they ate "common over-the-counter medicine," according to the Chicago Fire Department, as reported by local news outlets WGN 9 and ABC 7 Chicago. They found the package while walking to school.
The fire department tested the medication and said there was nothing unusual about the medicine, according to ABC 7 Chicago. But the children were taken to the hospital out of caution.
USA TODAY's attempts to reach the Chicago Fire Department and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) were not returned. The elementary school declined response.
How old were the children?
The children were between the ages of 8 and 9. They believed it was candy and ingested it, according to WGN9.
What medication did the children take?
The children took over over-the-counter heartburn medication they found while walking to school.
Several children were taken to the Comer Children’s Hospital, and are expected to be fine.
